It is 40 years ago this year that Eagle UK (formally Moon Brothers) manufactured their first muffler machine. At that time Moon Brothers was predominately a manufacturer of tanks and drum line machinery.
In 1967 Moon Brothers were approached by an Australian customer to see if they could end spin a muffler cap onto a body with oval forms. The reason for this enquiry was the mufflers were made of carbon steel with welded end caps, the weld was a weak point in the muffler prone to corrosion. Moon Brothers developed the SZ series machine that is still in use today around the world 40 years after manufacture.
In the early seventies, Eagle Canada progressed into muffler lines as a logical addition to their Tube End Forming equipment. During the mid eighties, Eagle purchased Moon Brothers in the UK to blend both products and gain a foot hold into the European market. The muffler machines produced for the European Market, although visibly identical to the North American offering, differed in that typical European mufflers are physically smaller and require more tool change overs due to smaller volume runs. The needs of the European market paved the way for the requirement of the Asymmetrical shell now being adopted in North America, the Japanese requirement of a rolled and spot welded shell and the development of fully welded shells using resistance welding and fully welded mufflers using laser technology.
Eagle has a longstanding installed base of muffler machines located in almost every country in Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Malaysia, Thailand and China. Recently one of Eagle’s service personnel evaluated a Muffler line in China that has been installed since 1991 and is still running 6 days a week at 24 hours a day. This is quite the testimonial to the products longevity if maintained regularly.
